Qld: Schoolboy critical with meningococcal disease

A 16-year-old Gold Coast private schoolboy is fighting for his life after contractingthe deadly meningococcal disease.

The Southport School boarder was admitted to Allamanda Private Hospital last Fridayand is in a critical condition.

Students and staff who have come in contact with the boy at the prestigious Anglicancollege have been treated with antibiotics.

But the school community has been advised the risk of contracting the disease is extremely low.

Headmaster BRUCE COOK says the student's parents have asked that no details be released.

About 100 cases of meningococcal disease are reported each year in Queensland.
