Fed: More hunger strikers taken to hospital

More asylum seekers staging a hunger strike on Nauru to protest their detention have
been taken to hospital suffering dehydration.

The Immigration Department says 18 detainees are in hospital, where they're receiving
intravenous fluids and being offered food.

A departmental spokeswoman says 45 men are continuing to refuse food and water.

The hunger strike began on December the 10th.

Rural Australians for Refugees spokeswoman ELAINE SMITH says the men on the hunger
strike are now in a desperate, confused state.

More than 280 asylum seekers, including 93 children, are being processed on the island
nation of Nauru as part of the federal government's Pacific Solution.
