EAST GERMANY'S POLITBURO FORCED TO QUIT FOR CHANGE.(Main)

Most of the East German Politburo, the highest authority in the communist state, was forced to resign Wednesday to enable the new party leader, Egon Krenz, to name a more streamlined and somewhat younger leadership.

The change in the Politburo, which for all 40 years of East Germany's history has held taut control over all aspects of East German life, came a day after the resignation of the Cabinet, whose members administer the economy.

The moves occurred against a backdrop of a continuing large-scale exodus of East Germans to West Germany and large but orderly street demonstrations.

The exodus of East Germans through Czechoslovakia since Saturday, when the authorities in effect lifted all restrictions on migration to West Germany by that route, passed the 50,000 mark and continued at a rate that grew to over 300 an hour, West German officials said. …
