Fed: Aust warned not to expect support for UN position

CANBERRA, Feb 7 AAP - Australia was today warned it can't expect international backingfor a seat on the UN human rights board, as Foreign Minister Alexander Downer defendedthe government's asylum seeker policy.

Former Human Rights Commissioner Chris Sidoti said the government's hard-line stanceagainst asylum seekers would nullify Canberra's attempts to win a seat at the United Nation'sCommission on Human Rights.

The commission, based in Geneva, is the main architect of the UN human rights work.
