Vic: Army may be called in to help fight bushfires

MELBOURNE, Jan 17 AAP - The Australian Army has been asked to back up Victoria's wearyfirefighters if bushfires in the state's north-east continue to worsen.
Acting Premier John Thwaites said the army could be deployed by Sunday.
Hot, dry winds today pushed eight fires burning in Victoria's alpine region acrosshard-won control lines.
Mr Thwaites said it was not the first time a Victorian government had asked for the army's help.
"We're going to be seeking support and backup from the army to support the firefightingefforts if the situation worsens …
